Shepherd Modular Assault Pack

The SMAP: 2000s gear design 25 years later?

Why, after so many years, are Modular Assault Packs still integrated with second line kit? The answer simply lends to allowing the user more storage for longer outings. Shepherd's Modular Assault Pack does just that, with design elements spanning the 25+ years of nylon development through GWOT. Designed specifically to augment the Shepherd Load Bearing Carrier, the SMAP also works on most modern plate carrier options.

One of the largest hurdles of designing the pack, wasn't even the pack itself: implimenting a self-access system to the pack was a critical design objective that we wanted to ensure worked to aid the end-user as much as possible. Removable G-Hook straps were implimented- and included in the purchase- allowing the user an easy self-access and removable process for the assault pack.

One option for side access: simply un-doing a chest-level G-hook and a 1" NEXUS buckle from rib-level, the pack can swing to one side like an overcoat.

Other option for over-head access: un-doing both rib-level buckles and pulling the pack over your head leaving the G-Hooks secured on your chest.

Enter, the SMAP.

Understanding the use case for Modular Assault Packs

Simply put, Medium Chest Rigs are designed to house ammunition for primary weapon platforms, frequently used mission-critical equipment, water sources, first aid items, and administrative items.

Primary Objectives for the MACS Rig:

  • Allow caliber-swapping capabilities for users
  • User-configurable modularity for changing mission set
  • Hardsewn center general purpose pouch for consistent gear management across team users.

Q: Why go with a medium chest rig like the MACS compared to other non-placard chest rigs?
A: Medium chest rigs pull away from placard systems in the use case of longer mission timeframes, more comfort for the user under heavier loads, and depending on design can keep or increase modularity capabilites. Specifically, the MACS is designed around a caliber-swapping core that allows the user to use the same rig for different weapon platforms and use cases. Most medium-sized chest rigs on the market also lack wing modularity, which dimish user's ability to change their second line as they refine their mission set.
